This document describes application programs, demos, and features that may be included in the Apple Extras folder on your hard disk.
• Apple Backup: A program you can use to copy the entire contents of your Macintosh hard disk onto floppy disks. See your user’s guide for information.
• AppleScript: A program you can use to automate tasks in the Finder and other programs.
IMPORTANT: Macintosh Guide will not work properly if the AppleScript program is renamed or deleted from your hard disk.
• At Ease folder: At Ease provides an alternative to the usual Macintosh desktop. It offers many privacy and security features that can be useful to people sharing one computer. For more information, see the At Ease user’s guide that came with your computer.
• Cache Switch: Some programs may not be compatible with the 68040 microprocessor. You can use the Cache Switch control panel when you use these programs.
• CPU Energy Saver: This control panel (for Performa 500 and 600 series computers only) turns off the computer after it has not been used for a specified period of time.
• HyperCard Player: HyperCard is a program you can use to organize information and accomplish many other tasks. Open the “What is HyperCard?” icon in the HyperCard Player folder for more information.
• Performa Extras folder: This folder contains the files for some of the buttons available in the Learning and Service/Support categories of the Launcher.
• QuickTime Extras folder: The QuickTime system extension allows you to integrate graphics, sound, video, and animation into documents that support QuickTime technology. This extension is already installed on your hard disk. You do not interact directly with the QuickTime extension. It works behind the scenes as part of your system software, providing multimedia features to the application programs that support QuickTime. The specific features of QuickTime that are available to you depend on which QuickTime features are supported by the program you’re using.
The QuickTime Extras folder may contain an extension that you can use with certain software to synthesize musical instrument sounds.
• SimpleText: A memo-writing program that supports the use of QuickTime movies and a variety of fonts, font sizes, and font styles. (References to a program called TeachText also apply to SimpleText.)
What’s in the Special Needs folder?
• CloseView: You can use the CloseView control panel to magnify a portion of your monitor’s display area up to 16 times and to invert the colors of the images on your monitor. This control panel is not pre-installed on your hard disk. To use CloseView, locate the icon for the control panel in the Apple Extras folder and drag it to your Control Panels folder.
Note: CloseView is not currently compatible with the Apple Video Player application program. If you want to view video or TV with Apple Video Player, you’ll need to turn off CloseView in the CloseView control panel (or turn it off by typing Command-Option-O).
• Easy Access: You can use the Easy Access control panel to adjust how quickly the pointer moves on the screen when you have Mouse Keys turned on. To use Easy Access, locate the icon for the control panel on your hard disk (it is inside the Apple Extras folder) and drag it to your Control Panels folder.
Note: Mouse Keys is a system software feature that lets you use the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard (instead of the mouse) to control the movement of the pointer on the screen. See Macintosh Guide for instructions on turning Mouse Keys on and off.
